It's really no surprise that the Chicago White Sox are sitting in last place of the AL Central at 14-33. However, it's a bit shocking that the Toronto Blue Jays are cellar dwellers in the AL East at 20-25, as they have failed to win a series in their last eight tries.

The Jays will look to build off Sunday's home victory over Tampa Bay as Chicago continues its six-game road trip. Let's dive into this one and offer a White Sox vs. Blue Jays pick.

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox got off to an extremely sluggish start at 3-22 out of the gate. However, Chicago has split its last 22 games to gain some confidence — although the Sox were swept in New York by the Yankees this past weekend.

Chicago has posted a respectable 10-14 record at home after losing nine of its first 10 games at Guaranteed Rate Field. But the Sox haven't seen any success away from the South Side, compiling a 4-19 road record, including getting swept four times.

The Yankees outscored the White Sox 17-5 in the three wins in the Bronx this past weekend, while Chicago has been held to two runs or less in five of its past six away games.

Erick Fedde spent the first six seasons of his career with the Nationals, before pitching in the KBO last season and seeing a ton of success by going 20-6 with a 2.00 ERA. Fedde has turned into the ace of this White Sox rotation with a 4-0 record, 2.60 ERA and 1.06 WHIP.

The Sox lost each of Fedde's first three starts before winning five of his last six outings, including four victories in the underdog role. Fedde has not allowed a run in his last two trips to the mound.

Chicago has struggled in road series openers by putting together an 0-7 mark this season, while winning only two Game 1's of a series in 15 tries.

Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have been one of the biggest disappointments in baseball this season and have a long way to catch up with the Yankees and Orioles at the top of the AL East.

But Toronto has to go through the one-game-at-a-time approach, as the Jays rebounded from blowing a 4-0 lead in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Rays by beating Tampa Bay in Sunday's series finale, 5-2.

Since April 21, the Jays have won consecutive games once, posting a dreadful 1-7 mark in their last eight games off a victory.

Eight of the past 10 series for Toronto have come against teams owning winning records, so this can be a short-term reprieve for Toronto, which has stumbled to a 5-9 record in its last 14 contests during the day.

The beacon of hope for the Blue Jays is Monday's starting pitcher, José Berríos, who leads the team with four wins.

Yes, the pitcher wins stat doesn't mean much, but the Jays are 6-3 in Berríos' nine starts, compared to a 3-6 mark with Yusei Kikuchi, 4-5 record with Kevin Gausman and 3-6 ledger when Chris Bassitt starts.

Removing a disastrous outing in which he allowed eight runs at Philadelphia, Berríos has given up a total of nine earned runs in his other starts. Toronto has won two of his three home starts, while not yielding a run in the two victories over Seattle and Colorado.

Although Chicago's lineup has several different pieces from last season, Berríos silenced the Sox by defeating them twice in 2023 and not allowing a run in 14 innings of work.

Betting Pick & Prediction

Chicago's road woes are hard to overlook, including how poorly the Sox have fared in series openers.

Toronto defeated Chicago in all six matchups last season, while all six games finished under the total.

Eight times in series openers the Sox have been shut out, while the Jays have scored one run in the first five innings of their last four series openers.

Considering how well Fedde has pitched of late and Berríos' success against the Sox, let's go with a low-scoring first five innings and take the Under through the halfway point of Monday's matinee.

Pick: F5 Under 4.5 (-138 at FanDuel | Play to -140)
