Video Captures Suns Owner Matt Isbhia Looking Pissed As Big 3 On The Verge Of Sweep
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

As the Phoenix Suns faced the prospect of being swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves, team owner Matt Ishbia's frustration was palpable.

Ishbia, who acquired the team last season, made significant investments to assemble a star-studded roster, including acquiring talents like Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker. However, despite the hefty investments, the team found themselves trailing 0-3 in the series, with elimination looming.

The Suns' financial situation adds another layer of concern for Ishbia. With the third-highest salary bill in the NBA, exceeding $191 million, the team is significantly over the league's salary cap. This overspending translates to an estimated luxury tax bill of around $68 million for the current season alone.

Looking ahead, the financial burden is expected to increase, with projections indicating that the Suns will maintain the highest salary bill in the league next season, already reaching $205 million without finalizing their roster. The anticipated luxury tax bill for the upcoming season is a staggering $104 million, further exacerbating the financial strain on the organization.

Against this backdrop of financial pressure and on-court disappointment, it's understandable why Ishbia appeared visibly displeased during the game. Despite his efforts to assemble a championship-caliber team, the Suns have fallen short in the playoffs, facing the possibility of an early exit.

For Ishbia, who undoubtedly has high expectations for his investment, the current situation is undoubtedly a cause for concern.

As the Timberwolves continued to dominate the Suns on the court, Ishbia's frustration serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and pressures faced by NBA team owners, both on and off the court.

The Suns Needed A Point Guard

The Phoenix Suns, boasting a trio of elite scorers in Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, and Kevin Durant, entered the season with high expectations. However, despite the offensive firepower provided by these three stars, the Suns lacked a true point guard to orchestrate their offense efficiently.

While Booker and Beal are capable ball handlers, asking them to shoulder the playmaking responsibilities proved to be a burdensome task. Both players excel primarily as scoring guards, relying on their ability to create their own shots rather than facilitating for others. Similarly, while Durant possesses excellent passing skills for a forward, he is more effective when utilized as a scoring threat rather than a primary playmaker.

The absence of a traditional point guard hindered the Suns' offensive flow and efficiency. Without a floor general to set up plays, distribute the ball, and organize the offense, the team struggled to generate easy scoring opportunities and exploit mismatches. The burden fell heavily on Booker, Beal, and Durant to create offense individually, leading to stagnant possessions and predictable play-calling.

In hindsight, it's evident that the Suns overlooked the importance of having a skilled point guard to complement their star-studded lineup. While they prioritized scoring prowess, they neglected the critical role of a floor leader in maximizing their offensive potential and maintaining team chemistry.

Looking ahead to the offseason, addressing the point guard position should be a top priority for the Suns' front office. Acquiring a playmaking guard who can effectively run the offense, distribute the ball, and alleviate the scoring burden on Booker, Beal, and Durant is essential for the team's success. A talented point guard would not only enhance the Suns' offensive capabilities but also provide stability and leadership on the court.

By bolstering their backcourt with a capable point guard, the Suns can address their glaring roster deficiency and position themselves as legitimate contenders in the upcoming seasons. As they reflect on their playoff shortcomings, investing in a quality point guard could be the key to unlocking the full potential of their star trio and elevating the team to championship contention.
